Reclaiming Your Rest: A Deep Dive into the "ABCs of Sleep" Course

“Tired as a mother.” We’ve all heard it, and many of us wear it like a badge of honor. But let’s be honest: “Mom Fatigue” is often just a polite term for chronic sleep deprivation. Between newborns and toddlers waking up at all hours, a full night’s sleep can feel like a distant memory.

As someone who has always cherished my 8–9 hours of rest, I was terrified of what motherhood would do to my sleep habits. For the first few months, I got lucky—my son was a “textbook” sleeper. But then, the dreaded four-month mark hit. Suddenly, bedtime became a three-hour battle of rocking, bouncing, and begging him to stay asleep, only for him to wake up multiple times throughout the night.

I was desperate, exhausted, and honestly, starting to dread the evenings. That’s when I discovered Cara from Taking Cara Babies .

What is the ABCs of Sleep?

Cara is a baby sleep expert, a former Labor and Delivery nurse, and a mom herself. Her courses are built on “the science of a nurse and the heart of a mama.”

Since my son was five months old, we opted for “The ABCs of Sleep,” a course specifically designed for babies aged 5–24 months. The program promises to help parents:

  • Achieve 10–12 hours of independent sleep in the crib.
  • Teach babies to fall asleep without assistance.
  • Effectively manage night wakings and weaning night feedings.
  • Establish a healthy, flexible nap schedule.

The Method: Gentle but Effective

I would describe Cara’s approach as a developmentally appropriate, gentler version of the “cry it out” method. While the idea of “crying” can be tough for any mom, Cara explains the science behind it beautifully: crying is often just a baby’s way of communicating through change, not a sign of fear or sorrow.

The course includes about 90 minutes of easy-to-digest video content and a comprehensive 60-page reference e-book. The core strategy involves putting your baby in the crib and using “pop-ins” every 10–15 minutes to reassure them (and yourself!) that you are there.

Our 14-Day Transformation

We were so sleep-deprived that we didn’t even wait for a weekend to start. We dove in on a Tuesday night.

  • Night 1: It was tough. It took three hours for him to fall asleep, and I’ll admit, I cried right along with him. He woke up once during the night and took an hour to settle back down.
  • Night 2: Progress! It took 90 minutes to fall asleep, and he slept through the entire night.
  • Night 3: The miracle happened. He fell asleep independently in less than 30 minutes and slept for 12 hours straight .

The Verdict: Is It Worth It?

While some sleep consultants charge upwards of $1,000, Cara’s packages (ranging from $179 to $319) felt like a steal for the results we achieved. We opted for the top-tier package, which included phone consultations with certified experts, providing that extra layer of confidence we needed.

This course didn’t just give me back my sleep; it gave me back the joy of motherhood. If you’re currently in the trenches of sleep deprivation, know that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
